Hello Stranger! What Brings You Out To This Neck Of The Woods
This is a folk art painting done on coarse canvas. The older gentleman is greeting someone he may know or a new comer. A good Friend of mine posed for the photo used for this painting, and his teeth are better than mine to hold that clay taveran pipe. The embroidered coat and hat are a part of my personal collection I made.

The Pocket
The young lady in this painting is tightly holding on to a pocket containing here money or other things of value to her. She would generally wear this pocket under her pettie coates tied around her waist and slip her hand through a slit at either side of of the pettie coats to enter the hidden pocket. young ladies looking to impress a prospectant future husband would emroider a sampler of alphabets and numbers along with a scene and designes and wear them on the outside of her pettie coats to inicate that she can sew and read and write. After marriage she would then wear them again under her pettie coats.

Sun Lit Room
This painting is of the same cabin in Pearisburg, VA. which is part of a series of frontier scenes I am currently working on using photos from this location. In this scene one can see part of the underside of the loft just over head on the upper left of the painting and the tools of everyday use on the frontier. Note the wide framed mirror in the middle right of the painting which was used in some homes and may have been brought from back east or traded for furs other goods carried by trappers on the frontier. This is a wrap around painting and does not have to be framed.

Frontier Home Stead
This painting was made from a photo I shot a my friends reconstructed one room early 1700's log home in Pearisburg, VA. This would have been the typical setting in many if not the majority of houses built on the Western Colonial Frontier by settlers who where either endentured servants who worked out their contract and had no money to settle in the east or no land was available for them to purchase at that time. Some came to trap furs in Kentucky, western Virginia, the western parts of North Carolina, the western parts of Pennsylvania and New York. These homes were mainly one room with a main fireplace and a loft for storage and older childeren slept. Some of them were expanded as families grew larger or were used untill the owner wished to move on futher out west. Painting is wrap around painted and dose not have tobe framed.

Answer to Liberty
Answer to Liberty 18 x 24 Oil on Canvas Sold |
This painting is inspired by the commitment of those who sacraficed all to make a dream of a nation based on the principals that all men are created equal and they and the generation after them could live in freedom. This is a folk art type painting With the American Flag in the back ground and the opening lines of The Declaration of Independence in the white stripes of the flag and Colonial Soldiers forming in the front. This and other paintings as this represent at least to me what so many freely gave their all and to all those who still do to ensure that future generations can still enjoy those same basic rights. Which is some thing that is not given so freely tobe cheaply sold or recklessly traded by some for selfish personal interests.
Captives
Captives 24x30 inches Oil on canvas |
These youg ladies are enjoying the after noon but they don't realize that in the near woods are Cherokee Indians ready to take them as captives. Despite the large clearings around the settlement for saftey, the indians still manage to get close enough with out being noticed to mount their attack on the settlement in and attempts to drive the settlers back over the mountains into Eastern Virginia and Western North Carolinia. Unfortunatley the girls are too far from the Block House to make and escape to saftey.

Watchful Eyes
The girl in this scene is trying to entice a watchful lamb to come close enough for her to pet while she is also keeping a watchful eye for indians that maybe lurking in the vast wilderness of the western frontier of Virginia in 1777.
The actual setting is taken from my pictures of a young girl re-enactor at The Block House located at Natural Tunnel State Park in Scott County, Virginia.which portays every day colonial life as well as indian life and the hardships and perils faced by those who settled the western frontier on their way to Kentucky.
